Brazil Health & Safety
In general terms, health and safety are not major problems for visitors to Brazil. However, there is a wide gap between rich and poor in the country, and petty crimes involving property are not uncommon. The major cities experience a high rate of crimes such as muggings and theft of personal property, and large slum areas exist which are not safe for tourists to visit. As long as you remain aware of your surroundings, don’t take any unnecessary risks and avoid obvious displays of wealth, you shouldn’t have any significant problems.
Sao Paulo is a relatively safe city to visit, and as your primary reason for being here is most likely to be your surgical procedure and recuperation, it is highly unlikely that you’ll be in any area where there is the risk of you being the target of petty thieves.
