Hotels in India

India provides visitors with a wide variety of accommodation choices; from modern five star, western style hotels, to low budget bungalows and hostels. Depending on your choice of location, accommodation in India will differ according to the country’s sprawling geographical diversity.

In the capital, New Delhi, there is a huge range of accommodations to suit all budgets. Many of the four- and five-star hotels are situated some distance from the center of town, while in the Connaught Place area there are a number of reasonably comfortable two- and three-star establishments. There are many budget and rock bottom options available but the facilities and standards of some of these need to be investigated before making your decision.

For the cheapest in accommodation, many travelers stay in hostels that are spread out throughout the regions. Hostels provide the most basic of amenities, including a bed, mattress and bed linen. The hygiene standard of these hostels is varied therefore visitors traveling in this way are advised to be prepared. Taking a travel sheet and a mosquito net is always a good idea!

Tourist bungalows and traveler lodges also offer economical accommodation, with the added bonus of comfortable lodgings and all inclusive meals. Visitors taking this option will often have a choice between a dormitory or private single room with an attached bathroom. This type of accommodation can be found mainly in highly populated tourist areas.

Situated near national highways, rest houses and bungalows present an interesting option for those wanting to experience India’s bygone colonial days. Introduced in the time of the British Raj, these buildings are mainly used by government officials on tour, but, tourists can arrange to stay here if they contact local authorities to reserve in advance.

Three- to five-star hotels are available in all main tourist destinations in India. At the lower end, guests will find comfortable rooms with satisfactory hotel services. At the higher end, visitors may opt for the grandeur and luxury of one of India’s five-star hotels. Many exceptional five-star hotel and resort chains operate in Rajasthan, Darjeeling, Sikkim and around the Himalayas.

The peak season in India is during the cooler winter months, especially from November to February. At these times accommodation in major tourist areas can be difficult to find.
