Travel in India

India is a huge country and offers many modes of transport. In recent years domestic air travel has become more widespread and affordable, while the rail network is one of the largest in the world. A huge array of buses, both government-operated and private, run all over India, but travel can be slow and uncomfortable although luxury buses are provided on many routes.

Driving is another option, but India’s traffic and accident rates are horrendous. A car and driver might be the safest option. In south India, boat travel on inland waterways is a relaxed way of seeing something of the daily life of the area.

Inter-city and inter-state buses connect almost all of India’s regions. This is a cost-effective way to travel around. Buses vary from region to region, but there are often a variety of buses from which to choose. In many parts of the country, private buses are available in addition to those run by the government. Private buses are generally faster, more comfortable and more expensive.

Rail travel is one of the most popular options in India, with the country boasting the fourth largest rail network in the world. Almost every city, town and village is connected by the train network. Train travel is relatively cheap, with price variation depending on your choice of second class or air-conditioned seating. There are a multitude of different train types, so be sure to choose the correct ones.

The Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express provide high-speed, fully air-conditioned, express trains to and from most major cities. Indian Railways also runs a number of luxury trains, like the Palace on Wheels and the Royal Orient Express, which were formerly used by Indian royalty and are now available for tourists.

There are few ferries in India, but a boat trip in Kerala will enable you to take in the life of the local people of the area at the same time as moving from one destination to another.

Driving in India is renowned for being a hair-raising experience, but some visitors choose this option. It’s advisable - if you do want to take this mode of transport - to employ a local driver who is familiar with the local driving style and can also arrange a suitable vehicle for your needs.

Air travel is now a popular way of moving around in India. With relatively cheap airfares and domestic flights to over 60 destinations, this is one way to see more of this vast country in less time. Visitors wishing to take domestic flights should keep in mind that ticket costs must be paid in the local currency, US dollars or pounds sterling.
