People with chronic pain, swelling or locking in their knee may find quick and easy relief in a procedure known as arthroscopy. In what may be the future of surgical procedures, an orthopedic surgeon makes a small incision and inserts an arthroscope, which is about the width of a pencil, into the knee.
This instrument contains an optic fiber camera which sends a picture to a monitor. The images allow the surgeon to determine exactly what is wrong with the knee without much intrusion. During the inspection, the surgeon can also repair damaged tissue through other small incisions using tiny surgical instruments.
Procedure information
Nearly all arthroscopic knee surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. All kinds of anesthesia can be used in this operation and if you’re brave enough, you can watch it happen on the monitor. After making an incision, a clear fluid is pumped into the knee area to remove any cloudy fluids. This allows for a clear view, at which time the arthroscope is inserted and the surgeon can determine where the problem lies.
If surgical treatment is necessary, the doctor can use a series of specially-designed small instruments to cut, burn or shave off the damaged area. Common problems include torn cruciate ligaments or pieces of articular cartilage, sometimes requiring the removal of fragmented bone or cartilage. The whole procedure takes around 2 hours and leaves virtually no scarring.
Recovery time
As this is an outpatient procedure, patients can go home about 2 hours after the surgery. The recovery period from arthroscopic knee surgery is much shorter than traditional open knee surgery, but certain precautions still need to be followed. The leg must be kept elevated as much as possible for the first few days, using ice to help reduce swelling. Patients should use crutches for a couple of weeks while they undergo a physical rehabilitation program, which must be rigorously followed.
