Lasik Eye Surgery - Medical Tourism

Lasik is used to correct near or far-sighted vision in order to reduce or remove a person’s need to wear glasses or contact lenses. The acronym stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and this procedure permanently alters the shape of the cornea with an excimer laser. Successful patients can see clearly immediately after the surgery and most are pleased with the results.

Procedure information

During lasik, a microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea, leaving just a hinge. The flap is folded back to reveal the middle of the cornea and then a laser is used to reshape it. This reshaping will help the eye to better focus light onto the retina, providing clearer vision for those who are near or far-sighted. Afterwards, the flap is put back into place.

The procedure takes only about 5 or 10 minutes per eye. Not everyone is a good candidate for lasik however and you should seek several opinions and only trust a reliable doctor.

Recovery time

After the surgery, you will need to rest for a while. Some people choose to do both eyes on the same day, or do the second one a week later. There is minimal pain afterwards, and bandages can be removed after a long nap at home.

Most good candidates will have 20/20 or better vision after the procedure, while some only get 20/40 or not quite as good. Some patients may still need glasses or contact lenses following laser vision correction; however, since the shape of the cornea is altered, special contact lenses must be used.
