Medical Tourism in Mexico
Mexico has long attracted a large number of tourists from all over the world and medical tourism is rapidly becoming a growing source of new visitors. The country’s doctors are well-trained and qualified, with many having studied in the US.
Mexico’s proximity to the US makes it a highly popular destination for North Americans seeking a variety of low-cost medical treatments. Hospitals and clinics in many parts of Mexico are modern and feature up-to-date diagnostic equipment. Hospitals typically have large and often luxurious patient rooms, most of which are private.
Good quality health care can be found throughout the country, with Mexico City and Cancun being the most popular destinations for medical treatment among international patients. Among the more reputable hospitals is Galenia Hospital in Cancun, which has specialists in many fields including cardiology, dermatology, neurosurgery and gynecology. Many foreigners who have sought treatment in Mexico have reported that their Mexican doctors related to them on a more personal level than health professionals in their home countries.
Most medical procedures can be undertaken in the country and will average at approximately 30 to 50 percent of what they would cost in the US. For most drugs, pharmacies in Mexico charge 50 to 70 percent less than in the US. Medicines are manufactured by the same well-known international drug companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer and Roche, and the drugs purchased from pharmacies in Mexico are as safe as those bought in the US.
