Travel in Mexico

With a variety of transport modes available, traveling through Mexico is easy. The two main national airline carriers, Mexicana and Aeromexico, offer reliable and convenient services to most major cities. The government operated rail service in Mexico is safe and comfortable, with many routes connecting most of the country’s major cities.

For the best part of the country, roads are well built and in good condition. There is a huge selection of buses traveling between destinations. Driving yourself through Mexico is an option, but can be dangerous in the night and the tolls on the highway network are some of the most expensive in the world.

With an ever-increasing large population, the capital, Mexico City, has many different options for getting around. The city’s metro subway system connects most parts of the city. There is also a light rail network that services the city and surrounding suburbs. The government-run bus service travels throughout the city with hundreds of different routes offered. Taxis are in abundance too, with some metered government licensed cars with many illegal private cars operating.

Mexico City has four main bus terminals located throughout the city which service different areas of the country. The northern bus terminal, Central Norte, offers services which head towards the border with California that stop at many cities along the way. The southern, eastern and western bus terminals operate services to towns in local areas.

The busy city has an extensive rail network, which services not only the metro area but also the national lines too. With modern high-speed national trains and an electric metro service, Mexico City is easy to get around. The main stations within the city are Centro, Reforma, Alameda, Zona Rosa, Chapultepec, San Angel, Coyoacan and La Villa.

Ferry travel in Mexico is possible between many of the coastal towns and islands. Ferry Santa Rosalia operates services between Guaymas, Sonora, Santa Rosalia and Baja California. Cozumel-Playa del Carmen Ferry offers a connection between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

Traveling through Mexico by car is a good way to see the countryside but can be dangerous, especially at night. There are many taxis in the capital which offer trips negotiated on a daily rate basis.
