Travel to Mexico

There is a great choice of options for traveling to Mexico. With over 30 international airports in the country, flying is the most popular. International rail links are available but can be slow and uncomfortable. Buses make the journey to Mexico from California in America and also to Guatemala.

There are 40 official border crossing points with America, which makes driving to Mexico an interesting alternative to arriving by air. Between Guatemala and Mexico there are 10 land borders which can be crossed by car. Mexico is a popular destination for cruise liners and there are ferry services from California and the southeast of America.

Traveling to Mexico by car is a great way to see the countryside, but it can be dangerous driving at night. Bringing a car across the land borders can be difficult and for this reason it is more convenient to hire a car within Mexico.

Arriving by train is possible with reasonably good rail links connecting California to Mexico. The trains can be very slow, hot and uncomfortable, however.

There are frequent bus links between Guatemalan towns and Mexico, across the 10 land borders. Traveling by bus from the US is only comfortable if your destination is a Mexican city close to the border, as the distances beyond are long. There are Greyhound buses that travel from the US to the Mexican border in the north, where alternative transport can be organized.

The main airport in Mexico is Benito Juarez International in Mexico City and it has many flights arriving daily from surrounding countries. There are also another 30 plus international airports situated in Mexico with an abundance of flights arriving from the US daily.

With two coastlines, it is not surprising that Mexico has many international ferry connections. Ferries and cruise liners arrive from Houston and Miami in the US and continue on to the Caribbean. Some of the ferry companies offer great discounts for last-minute bookings.
