Mexico Information

Most tourists can buy an FMT tourist card on arrival in Mexico, including those from the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Mexico uses the peso, with banks generally offering the best exchange rates. The best time to visit is around December to February along the coast and a bit later in the year for Mexico City. Peak seasons in Mexico are March through April and July through August.

Mexico is a great holiday destination. It has beach resorts, bustling cities, pretty countryside and friendly people. The Baja Peninsular holds most appeal to Americans, while Europeans tend to congregate around of the likes of Playa del Carmen.

Mexico Health and Safety

Mexico isn’t the safest place for a holiday, with a fair amount of street crime and some health problems – namely malaria in remote areas. The tap water is unsafe to drink and June to November often sees hurricanes around the Gulf coast.

Getting There

Around 30 US cities are directly linked with Mexican cities, with flights from Los Angeles to Cancun taking three hours. You can also fly direct to Mexico City and other major centers from European cities in around 12 hours, as well as from Australia via Hawaii (20 hours).

Everything is available from cheap dormitory accommodation to five-star hotels in the towns and resorts. Rates are reasonable although haven risen of late. You could pick up a budget place for around US$20 per night, while a Marriot or Four Seasons in Mexico City would cost you around US$500.
