Travel in Thailand

Getting around in Thailand is easy with a varied and inexpensive selection of modes of transport available. From three-wheelers known as tuk-tuk to Bangkok’s air-conditioned taxis, visitors are well catered for when it comes to getting from one part of the country to another.

Domestic air travel is becoming increasingly popular while the comprehensive Thai road network provides well-signed routes for cars and buses. The train service in Thailand is less extensive, but nevertheless can get you from one end of the country to the other. Boats serve popular islands in the south while the ubiquitous tuk-tuk are perfect for short, inner-city hops.

The capital, Bangkok, is renowned for its often gridlocked streets, but the easy to use BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro provide good alternatives to sitting in traffic. The bus system here is extensive and covers those areas not served by other forms of public transport. The waterways provide another unique way to get across the city with numerous canals and the Chao Phraya River served by river taxis.

The capital has three main bus stations that manage services to destinations all over the country: the Northern (Moh Chit), Eastern and Southern terminals. For comfort VIP luxury buses are the best option, but cheaper air conditioned or fan services are also available.

Two principal railway stations handle trains to all regions on the country in Bangkok: Hualamphong and Thonburi stations. The former operates connections to north, north-eastern and selected southern destinations while the latter serves mostly southern bound trains.

Boats are a popular way of reaching Thailand’s islands, and sometimes the only way. Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Chang, Koh Pha Ngan and other islands are served by regular ferries from the mainland, but services can be affected by the weather during the rainy season.

Once you have arrived at your location, getting around by regular taxi, shared taxi (songthaew), motorized three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) or motorbike taxi is easy. Many visitors also choose to rent a scooter or car for daytrips.
