A fascinating study conducted by researchers from the Czech University of Life Sciences at the Voděradské Bučiny National Nature Reserve recently highlighted one such inspiring incident involving a female wild boar and two young boars in distress.
The researchers were primarily focused on exploring protective measures against African swine fever when their motion-activated camera unexpectedly captured a remarkable scene. An adult boar came to the aid of two young boars that had become trapped. This adult boar’s swift and effective actions displayed a level of empathy and intelligence that is often underestimated in the animal world, showcasing a genuine act of prosocial behavior.
For the actions to be classified as a deliberate rescue, the study identified four essential criteria: the individual in captivity must be in distress, the rescuer must face some risk, the rescue must be successful, and the rescuer should not gain any immediate advantage. The female wild boar met all these criteria, which only adds to the significance of this rescue.
The rescue unfolded during the late hours of the night, where the female boar spearheaded a group of at least eight other boars to assist the trapped youngsters. Remarkably, the entire rescue operation was completed in just 29 minutes, with the adult female strategically removing logs that were obstructing the trap. The captured images even showed the female boar exhibiting signs of distress, further underscoring her emotional investment in the situation.
