Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s Extremist Ideology and the Tragic Attack
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the individual accused of carrying out a deadly terrorist assault in New Orleans that claimed 14 lives and left many more injured, had been vocal about his extremist religious beliefs nearly a year prior to the incident. Under the moniker Jabbar, he shared recordings on SoundCloud in which he denounced music, intoxicants, sexual activities, and various other pleasures, labeling them as evils that needed to be eradicated.
The audio recordings, which lasted approximately 20 minutes each, were confirmed to be Jabbar’s voice, matching that of a promotional video for his real estate venture. Authorities have noted that Muslim scholars widely disavow the radical viewpoints espoused by Jabbar and similar extremist factions, asserting that true Islamic teachings promote mercy, peace, and justice.
Despite a history of legal troubles, including allegations of drunk driving and domestic abuse, Jabbar’s path towards radicalization went largely unnoticed until these recordings were made public, exposing his extremist mindset. He expressed a belief that music and poetry led individuals astray, insisting that humanity has a duty to condemn evil.
Jabbar’s rhetoric intensified over time, with reports suggesting he drew inspiration from groups like ISIS and harbored intentions to commit acts of violence. Initially contemplating harm against his own family, he ultimately shifted his focus towards joining the terrorist organization. On the day of the attack, he took to social media to share videos articulating his ISIS ideology.
Driving a rented pickup truck adorned with an ISIS flag, Jabbar plowed through a crowd of people celebrating New Year’s in New Orleans, opening fire with a rifle on both revelers and law enforcement before being shot dead. The tragic incident resulted in 14 fatalities and approximately 35 injuries, affecting numerous local residents.
