Caution Ahead!

The Dangers of Relying on AI for Financial Guidance

While artificial intelligence continues to garner significant attention, leading chatbots often fall short when it comes to delivering reliable financial advice.

In a recent investigation led by AI experts Gary Smith, Valentina Liberman, and Isaac Warshaw from the Walter Bradley Center for Natural and Artificial Intelligence, four prominent chatbots were evaluated for their financial acumen. The findings were less than promising.

Among the chatbots assessed—OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o, DeepSeek-V2, Elon Musk’s Grok 3 Beta, and Google’s Gemini 2—none managed to provide consistently accurate recommendations. Instead, they were described as “frequently verbose but often inaccurate” in their financial assessments.

Using a scoring system, these chatbots struggled to impress, with none achieving more than 5 out of a possible 12 points. Gemini notably lagged, finishing with a mere 1.5 points.

Inaccurate Insights

Some responses from the chatbots were alarmingly incorrect; for instance, Grok miscalculated expenses related to a rental property.

These chatbots not only grappled with fundamental financial inquiries but also failed to deliver insightful analysis. Many responses appeared to be directly lifted from various online sources.

The researchers issued a warning against placing blind faith in chatbots, emphasizing that their “comforting mimicry of human intelligence” might mislead users into making detrimental choices.

“The true risk comes from allowing computers to dictate decisions they’re not equipped to handle,” the researchers stated.
